Review: Cut Copy - Free Your Mind

If the 80's is having a comeback in this era, Cut Copy's album Free Your Mind is definitely part of the soundtrack. Dan Whitford's voice is reminiscent of Duran Duran and Pet Shop Boys; the synthesizers are not, however, straight 80's soundfonts. They're more modern, though in some tracks (like Footsteps) they have a decidedly 90's influence. The entire album, in and of itself, is dance-able in a good way. The use of guitars and bass doesn't overpower the main instrument, the synthesizer, and overall, the use of instruments is balanced towards synthpop sensibilities. The tracks are mixed well, and there's a few interludes to help bring one back into the song. However, I can't see myself remembering this album in a week; it seems like something to put on when working on something else. It beats the local radio station by a country mile though.

Rating: 3.8
Summary: Indietronica flavored with modern 80's kitsch.
